What Are Life Insurance Leads? A Guide for Insurance Agents

A life insurance lead is a record of a consumer who has expressed interest in life insurance coverage and shared contact details so a licensed agent can follow up. That definition is simple; the market around it is not. The same word covers everything from a fresh consumer who verified their phone two minutes ago to a spreadsheet row resold for the fifth time.

Where life insurance leads come from

Most leads in this market originate from paid consumer traffic. A person searching for or responding to an advertisement about life insurance coverage clicks through to a questionnaire and answers questions about coverage amount, age, health and household situation. The completed questionnaire becomes the lead record.

The quality difference between providers usually comes down to three things: how the traffic was acquired, how much the consumer actually answered, and what happens to the record after it is captured.

Shared, exclusive and aged leads

These three labels describe distribution, not quality of intent, and they are worth separating in your head before comparing prices.

  • Shared leads are sold to several agents at once. Cost per lead is lower, but you compete on speed with everyone else who bought the same record.
  • Exclusive leads are delivered to one agent. You pay more per record and you are the only person calling from that submission.
  • Aged leads are older records resold at a discount, often months after the consumer submitted. Intent has usually decayed.

What phone verification actually changes

A lead is only useful if the phone number reaches the person who filled out the form. SMS one-time-password (OTP) verification sends a code to the number entered and requires the consumer to type it back before the submission completes. Mistyped and deliberately fake numbers do not survive that step.

Every Broker Buddy General Life lead is SMS OTP verified before it is delivered. That does not guarantee the consumer answers your call — nothing does — but it removes an entire category of wasted dials.

Judging a lead source before you spend

Useful questions to ask any provider, including us:

  • Is the lead exclusive, and is that written into the terms?
  • Is the phone number verified, and how?
  • How quickly does the record reach me after the consumer submits?
  • What qualification fields come with it?
  • Can I control the states I receive and the days leads arrive?
  • Where do the leads land — email, a spreadsheet, or a system I can actually work in?

Where the lead goes matters as much as the lead

A verified exclusive lead that sits in an inbox for four hours performs like a bad lead. The delivery path — notification, a place to log the call, and a follow-up you will not forget — is part of the product, not an afterthought. Broker Buddy delivers each lead into the Broker Buddy Tracker with the full qualification record already populated, and can push it into GoHighLevel for agents who work out of GHL.
